I'm looking to buy a new Powerwinch Windlass for my 24.5' Hydra Sport. Should I follow the specifications and buy a 450 pounds pulling power windlass for boats up to 27'or should I go with the 600 pound pulling power windlass for boats up to 30'?

Thanks :

I assume since you're asking the question that you are willing to get the 600# model. Never hurts to have a little more power than you need. Steep ramps. Heavily loaded boat. Go for the bigun'

You must be talking about an anchor windless. It really matters what anchors, lines and conditions you are in. All chain in 100' will be heavy. All chain in 30' is way different. I had a 2000lb manual windless on a 42' sailboat with 150' of chain and 40lb danforth...no problem. Many 30' sailboats have elec 500lb units.

I'm confused also. I have never heard of a Powerwinch windlass. If you are talking about an anchor windlass, the 450 will be more than adequate for your boat. If it is a trailer winch, I'd still stick with the recommended. How much force do you really want to put on your bow eye?

Re: Windlass

I just installed a Lewmars Horizon 500 on my 24' Striper (OK for up to 30' boats); could have installed a less-powerful model, but since the footprint was the same, feel better since I anchor in Columbia River current.
Works very well, I can report. Cost $799 (West Marine, who were very helpful), plus wiring. Had to wait a month before I could get the courage to drill the necessary hole into the anchor locker, but it works great!
