windless anchor question

Hello all,


I noticed that wehn pulliing up my anchor the lione seem to slip in the windless and it stops pulling up. Has any one ever seen this before. I am thinkinig that I may just need to new anchor line but was wonderign if there are any adjustments. It a hoizontal type windless.

A slipping line means two things- either the rode is worn and is slipping in the gypsy or the gypsy itself is worn out. Obviously the rode would be the first thing to look at as it is the cheaper of the two. If the teeth on the gypsy are worn it needs to be replaced. One some models with free-fall down, the clutch may also be at fault. It depends on the model.

Keep in mind also that as the rode drops into the locker (I hate to call it an anchor locker, who puts their anchor in there?), it will stack up on itself, not allowing the vertical drop it needs to continue to be paid in. Smaller lockers are a big culprit...

If the rope is stiff, it can slip. Try washing it and soak it in fabric softener to soften it up.

If the finger does not push the rope into the gypsy with adequate force, the rope will slip. You might have a broken or weak finger torsion spring.

There may be a allen head flush bolt on the side of the gypsy. Make sure it has not loosened up.

As stated above, if you have a flush mounted winch, there may be an allen head or a large star-shaped fitting in the center of the winch. Tightening these (slightly) will provide a better grip on the clutches for the pulley. Your should have come with a large plastic wrench/handle to fit this. Give it a quarter-turn or so and see if that helps.

On ships they are called "chain lockers".

Well then on boats at least call them "Rode Lockers". And I'm IN this business...

Thanks for all the help, it turned out that the hex head blot on the side of the gypsm was loose. gave it a half turn and we are good
