I am sure computers are put on this world to keep everyone confused and to ask questions. We recently went from dial up to ADSL(my girlfriend)and loaded the sp2 off a disk and had no problem doing this. Now what happens is that everytime she starts it up and during the day at different times she gets this pop up saying there is a new hardware installation to be installed and do you want to instal it. When we check it out, the wizard is for her old modem for dial up. I have clicked on the installation wizard "not at this time" and have also tried "cancel" but sure enough, it appears all the time. It's a real pain. Is there anyway to get rid of this permanently? I do not want to get rid of the automatic update feature(if this is part of it) but do want the found new hardware to go away. Any thoughts on this?

malibu, go to control panel, click on internet options and then click on connections and see if you see the dial up modem in that box.

If you do, click it and then click remove. That should tell it you no longer use it.

You can always go back later if need be and add it back.

Re: Windows XP SP2

Tks for the help guys. I will try SBN's way first and if that doesn't do it, I will actually remove it like you said to do LIC. Will let you know how I made out.

Malibu4u, Who was your dialup ISP?? If it was AOL, or the like, remove their software. Goto into control panel, Network connections, click on Advanced from top menu, then down to Advanced Settings. If you show File and printer sharing enabled, be sure you remove the check mark for TCP/IP.Do this for any and all adaptors you have. Close the Advanced window.Right click on any icon for dialup, then properties and look for stuff like AOL VPN protocols etc and delete same. You should show only a Microsoft client,File and Printer sharing, a TCP/IP entry and possibly NWLink. These are OK
If you show a Network Adaptor, right click on it, pick properties. Again, look for any AOL VPN entries and delete same.

If you have only one computer on your setup, it's probably best to disable File and Printer sharing in the Advanced menu. If you DO have more than 1 computer (hopefully using a router) AND you are sharing files, be sure to unbind(uncheck) the TCP/IP box under File Sharing (Network Settings,Advanced-Advanced Settings menu). Use NWLink/IPX instead.

Edit: Doh.. I just noticed your on WinXP not Win2K, oh well, same principals applies.
