I own a 1988 Winner 2208 with a full transom and bracket mounted Mercury 225 1994 carb engine. It runs fine and does 30 MPH at 4000 rpm.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this boat and a lower HP outboard. I know the boat is rated for 150-300 hp. The prior owner says he bought it with a 200 hp Suzuki and it did not perform as well as with the 225 when he installed it in 1995.

The boat is listed as 3000 pounds dry and without the engine so I figure 4000 pounds when in use.

Any experience or advice would be appreciated.

I am wondering if I can bet better MPG in a lower horspower engine. I don't really need to go over 25 mph - but I travel long distances in salt water to fish - can go minimum of 15 miles and max of 30 miles EACH way to get to my areas that I fish. MPG really really matters a lot.

Re: Winner 2208 Horsepower

smith, I do not think you will want to keep your HP. Not many planing hulls can run at any speed. You can try and throttle back and run the motor at 25 MPH, but you may not be able to stay on plane. A smaller motor will make this situation worse. You may actually end up having to run the smaller motor harder to achieve the same speeds, and use more fuel.

I would lighten up the weight in the boat, getting rid of all non essential stuff, make sure the bottom is clean, make sure the motor is trimmed properly and make sure the motor is propped properly. You should get pretty good mileage with that motor, if you keep the revs low and the motor is in tune. From your description of the weight and performance, dropping below 200HP will be detrimental.

4000 rpm, Is that your maximum full throttle rpm? If so, something is wrong, either the engine is not putting out full horsepower, or it's overpropped, & lugging (not good). By the way, your best fuel economy is the point where your hull just reaches full plane.

your wot rpms should be 5500 rpms, if not you have engine or prop problems, which is eating fuel. proper set up will get you a long way on economy.

Re: Winner 2208 Horsepower

I also own a 1988 Winner 2280 W/A that I purchased new. Winner offered three models in the 2280 a Center Console, Walk Around and full deck Brougham. Winner listed all three at 3000 lb dry weight and no engine. I had mine weighed when new as I was having a problem getting it proped wright. Well guess what they weigh a lot more than 3000 lb dry. I called the MFG the spc given is for dry hull weight "not including the deck"! My Walk Around weighs 4200 lb dry and no engine. The fuel tanks can be 97 gal up to 150 gal at 6.5 lb per gal your fuel weight can be 630.5 lb to 975 lb. My boat came with 5.0 225 HP I/O at 4800 WOT with a 15 X 15.5 prop speed is 45 MPH. I just completed a repower to a 5.7 320HP and the fuel milage went up. If your WOT is 4000 RPM you have a fouled bottom or engine problem or "over proped". An outboard turns more WOT RPM than a I/O. I hope this helps.

Re: Winner 2208 Horsepower

Looked up a couple of tests using 22ft 2,800lbs,3,000 and 3,400.225 hp.Etecs
max speed was 44.9 48.8 and 50.5 mph.best cruising 3,500 25.0 mph 9.7gph 2.7mpg,4,500 36mph,14.63gph 2.5mpg,3,500 27.5mph 8.24gph 3.3 mpg.Interesting the heaviest boat ran the best speed and mpg.It appears 225 is ample on all three.
While best cruising speed was slightly above planing speed one boat was fully 1,000 rpm above planing speed.another was 500 rpm above.
I think the best approach to figure best mileage is a flow meter.WOT GPH
(gallons per hour) was 19.15 to 23.33

I don't think you are going to do much better with that engine. 4000-4200 is a good cruise rpm and your speed is about what you should expect. I would think that you are probably running a 14 1/2 X 17 prop. Your fuel comsumption will be about 12 gal per hr.
