I have a '78 16' Sailfish that I purchased earlier this summer. The boat was taken care of really well by the original owner and he put 10k into it for a Yamaha 115 in '04. Being that this is my first boat, I managed to scratch her up in a small accident. I've been reading this boat restoration book. I think I'm going to putty up the scratches starting in Jan 2010. I use the boat primarily for fishing and don't want to work on her until after the fishing season. How much does temperature affect the putty curing? There are additional stuff I want to do as well like laying glass in the splash well area to reinforcing the transom strength for the heavy motor. Currently there is glass in key areas but I want to add more. I'm just trying to gauge my planning process if I'm missing something important. I'm in Seattle and the temp is usually 50+ degree around that time. Will be working on the boat in my garage, which is probably closer to 60 degree.

Re: Winter Boat Restoration Project

the colder the temp....the slower the process.....

60 deg is a little cool yet....the resin wont go as far.

try heating the area with work lamps......dont get the substraight too hot....you should still be able to touch it.
