Winter cover question

Last year I used 2x4's and an oversized tarp with bungee cords and that worked OK. Has anyone used 1" pvc to create a web? I was thinking of bending 2 like an upside down u and connecting both with a crosspiece for the cockpit area and then running an additional pvc or 2x4 to the bow. Think it would hold up? I have a 21' W/A and live in NY.

Thanks.

Re: Winter cover question

Any framework that will support anticipated snow loading and that prevents pooling of water will work. Here in the midwest, shrink wrapping is very common on small to very large boats that must spend the winter outside. If you use a tarp, you should add some mothballs and Decon or similar rodent poison to avoid an infestation of the critters that like to chew on wiring, seats, and other stuff.

I've used 1" PVC pipe and it worked great. I did however add a center support just to make sure.

These forums are awesome. Thanks for your quick replies. I guess I will try the pole and PVC.

I built one with 4 pvc drain pipe.It runs from the front to the back. With 4 legs that angle out to the sides. About 4 ' tall in the center. Heavy duty tarp with jugs of used peanut oil hanging from the side to keep it tight. Works excellent and lets lot of air ciculate through it to keep everything nice and dry.

Last year i used PVC sced 40 3" i think. But what might be useful to you is i used the pipe insulation stuff, the stuff that comes in 10' sections with a split in it so you can wrap it around a pipe. Its like foam with a slit in it. I put that around the top of my windshield so it didnt tear the tarp. Also used the rest of it on the swim ladder and everything else that might cut the tarp. Just an idea if you have sharp edges.
