I was wondering if anyone could help me with getting my boat winterized?I have a AQ125A Volvo with a 270 outdrive. The engine has a heat exchange therefore I believe that I would be blowing out any water in the outdrive only.I than thought I would check and maybe change the antifreeze in the motor.Than I would do an oil change on the motor and drain out the oil in the outdrive for the winter.I know about adding a gas stabilizer to the fuel tank ,but should I fill the tank first or is it better to keep the tank low?I would like to know more about fogging the engine and how nessesary that would be?I live in N.W Pennsylvania and expect the usual harsh winter. Thanks for any help.

Re: Winter is coming !!!!

Your engine has 2 cooling systems. The raw water side will have to be drained or it will freeze and break the heat exchanger, some of those copper pipes and the oil cooler if you have one.
The raw water side of the system is what cools the antifreeze side, as they are combined on your engine. The raw water side does what your car radiator does. But the radiator in a car is out in the open where air can run across it.
Check you manual for the raw water drains on your engine.
Yes change the oil and filter, and change the fuel filter and check for water in the fuel. You don't need water in the carb and filter all winter.
When you drain the drive oil, refill it, don't leave it empty. It only takes 3 quarts of 30W engine oil. Also check the u-joint bellows for water, or you may not be able to get it apart if it rusts together over the winter.
Fogging the engine just puts a fine film of oil on the cylinders and pistons, and valve train to help protect it over the long winter of no being used.
Yes fill the gas tank and use the proper amount of stabilizer for you tank size. With the tank full, you have less condensation (water).

Re: Winter is coming !!!!

Well I just finished changing the outdrive oil.I bought the pump hose tool or whatever its called. It really made that job easy.Surprised at what little mess I made.Ha!Ha!.Next up is an oil and filter change for the motor. It doesn't look like its going to be as easy as I thought. There is not much room to work in.Any Ideas? Thanks.

Sound like none of you have manuals. You really should have one for your engine and drive. Try here on iboats or Ebay. Those few dollars will take you a long way.

Go to the top of the page. Under "Helpful Links", click on the link for "Manuals".
You need the one from 68 to 91.

My neighbor has a pump thing (holds like 6 quarts) with a hose that goes in through the dipstick. I get most of the oil out that way and then drain the rest the usual way to make sure I get the dregs.

Advantage is that theres so little left after pumping it out you can use a really shallow pan to catch the dregs. I've got room to maneuver the pan out without spilling whats in there, but if I couldn't I'd use the pump again to suck the oil from the pan. Really cuts down on the mess!
It comes with 3 different size hoses for different distick tube diameters.

Don't remember the name of the pump or where he got it; anyone else use this that can provide specifics?

Lakelivin,
It sounds like the Tempo Oil Boy, that I have. It was about $50, and agree with you, it is a no mess pump.

John, yep, that was it.

trebor, I've heard quality can vary among different pumps. I can vouch for the Oil Boy and have heard others do so as well (sounds like John is happy with his).

I'm sure there are other brands that will do just as well, but you might want to do a little research & not just buy the first/ cheapest one you find. Have heard that some require alot more pumping, are messier to use, etc.
