I want to go swimming like I did in summer in winter. We will be back in France in three and a half months. I want to know what kind of wet suit I need to buy. I plan to stay in the water about 30 minutes or a bit longer like an hour if there is sunshine any ideas? We are talking about Brittany Coast France, north Atlantic

Any 5 mm neoprene suit with incorporated hood, the ones that are soft and stretchable to swim comfortably, do you plan the English Channel crossing ?

Are you paddling about in the water, or swimming (aerobic) for distance? Is the water temp roughly in the 20 C range?

Cheers,

CapeAnn - waiting for hurricane Irene!!!

That's cold!!! Hypothermia is a definite possibility if that's the water temp. 5 mm as mentioned by Sea Rider would work for a while, but after 10 minutes or so would be cold for women. A 7 mm insulates longer - but it's difficult to enjoy yourself as you splash about because the thing is quite restrictive. As a scuba instructor the exposure protection I would recommend is a drysuit which allows you to layer your protection and is quite flexible. That said - a decent drysuit can cost you as much as a entry-level inflatable boat. Here's a link to kayak drysuits which are less restrictive than diving drysuits and a bit cheaper.

OUCH, I will just keep my booty on land and enjoy the sea view. I dont like cold water and I thought the wet suits didnt make you wet. Thanks for the info, but I would rather just watch the sea. Leave this madness to the surfing pros I see out there in wintertime. :)

Cheers Zodiac! Most of my experience is based here in cold New England, or Alaska. Alaska being far tougher. Wetsuits are OK, but after a while in those temperatures my dive students (1/2 -3/4 hour) at 10C wearing 7 mm become uncomfortable. Some hypothermic which is not good. That said, they are underwater so perhaps that's not a fair comparison? I wear a drysuit and I can comfortably stay in 0C for about 45-60 minutes with the right under ware and argon gas to inflate the suit.

LOL regarding being able to yell to the houses nearby in the cold weather thread. :D I hope you have the greatest time fishing and I hope you land that 'Big Un' salmon, or codfish? There is nothing quite like fishing on your own boat!!! :)

Cheers,

CapeAnn

I will post a pic of the exact little part I want to fish, its not where I can be sucked out to sea. I will prolly get a Salmon, cod and some other fish out there but I doint know the English names. Some quite ugly but delicious:eek:

I will just not go in that water. I cant imagine having fun in a wet suit and freezing my hiney off. lol I will look for a pic of the area online
