Winterize again????

Looking for some input or recommendations. Last year did the full winterization of my 86 Cobia with Mariner 115hp two stroke. I always have run the carbs dry and filled the gas tank and added Sta-Bil. We purchased a pontoon and have used it extensively this summer. Other boat was never gotten out of storage. What are your opinions on the tank of gas in that boat? Is it simply a matter of adding more Sta-Bil and waiting until next spring or should I drain the tank and start all over. Also will the fogging oil I put in the cylinders be OK or should I repeat that process? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Mary.

I would leave your outboard alone. A good winterization should last several winters.

The fuel, though, is a different matter. Drain it out and burnt it in your 'toon or lawn tractor.

I agree with JB. In addition, you will want to charge the battery and may want to spray the powerhead with some anticorrosion stuff.

When you layed up the boat did you add stabil and THEN run the engine long enough to get the fuel into the fuel system? If not, you didn't do yourself a favor. You CANNOT run the carbs dry. There will still be some fuel in the lines and float bowl. That fuel needs to be protected as well. It is the air and fuel that creates a problem.

Yes, I always run the motor for 20 - 30 minutes after adding the Stabil just for the reasons stated. Have always had an easy time in the spring getting her ready to go. Just not sure about letting her sit another winter. I probably really need to sell the boat next spring as it looks like we have become avid pontooners. Sure do miss those 50mph blasts up and down the river though.

I would add some additional stabilizer (the antioxidants only can anti so much oxidation)
