Re: winterize

The problem most guys run into with putting off such a chore is that new distractions pop up and they get to it late, even too late.

If you have the time now, Bobby, and don't plan on any more boating this season, do it now.

Good luck. :)

Re: winterize

Bobby,

I live in north NJ and have winterized my boat. There is not much time left for boating, so I would do it now before you end up doing it in the cold or rain. Took me the better part of a Saturday, and now my time is being taken up with all the stuff I put aside to do boating.

Re: winterize

I'm in NJ, central, a little north of Phila. I will be winterizing the weekend of 11/14, unless they predict an extended cold snap at which time I'll at least winterize my fresh water system, waste tank, and washdowns. The motor is an outboard and as such is drained of water after each run (trailered) so I'm going to get every last weekend I can out of it. :) If I get nervous I'll flush some pink RV antifreeze through the flush adapter to put my mind at ease before I full-on winterize.

Re: winterize

Im in Northeastern PA and plan to take my boat on the water a few more times as long as we continue to have some indian summer days.

It all depends on your prevailing boating demands. If enjoy your boat via. tubing, water skiing, swimming, etc. your boating season has pretty much ended. However, if you use your boat for fishing or cruising, there is probably a decent amount of days left for good fishing opportunities and foliage cruising.

I have a tournament on Oct. 31st and will probably winterize shortly thereafter. I also trailer my boat so it gets routine care along the way.

Kevin

As long as you keep your outboard upright so the water drains out after each time you use it, it doesn't really matter when you winterize. You won't "kill" it even if it starts freezing at night. What you'll need when you get around to winterizing it is a way to run it for a while - to warm it up, run some stabilized gas through it and then fog it. After that, you'll drain and replace the lower unit lube - and having warmed it up will make that much easier. Even if it's cold, you'll probably be able to run water through a nose to the muffs or to fill a garbage can to run it in. When you're done running it, the water will drain out of the motor (if it's upright) before it freezes inside.

People run their motors in freezing weather all the time. Think duck hunting in northern Minnesota (grew up doing a little ice breaker work with the 12 foot Lund and 3 hp Evvy Duck Twin!).

Re: winterize

Kind of makes you feel lucky to be in OZ -- 100 deg F yesterday and better weather to come!
