Re: winterize

If the water is that low, why not get into it with a pair of hip waders and remove the lower unit. The remainder of the engine wrapped in plastic should be ok until the spring. Shove some grease up into the crank splines (where the driveshaft fits) to prevent any corrosion and just remember to adequately clean the grease out when spring comes.

Re: winterize

Mike;

No problem to take it off as you just undo the mounting nuts and allow it to drop. Before completely removing the main mounting nuts which you can see on the side, remove the trim tab and also get the nut under it.

When it drops, just do not remove the cam which you will see on the splines of the LU shift rod. If you do not remove it, you won't have a problem going through aligning it when the time comes.

If you post your engine s/n, I will get the parts listing for you, so you can see the items we are talking about.

Re: winterize

That s/n comes up as:

MARINER - ( 50 H.P. (1990 ))
Serial No: 0C252084 Model No: 7050412SD

Parts Listing for model 7050412SD:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/336.cfm

If you look at item 50 (Cam) under GEAR HOUSING (DRIVE SHAFT), that is the one to look for when you drop the LU.

Item 74 under GEAR HOUSING (PROPELLER SHAFT), is the trim tab and once removed you will see tha hardware underneath, to be undone.

If you get this in time, here is a link to the Clymer Service Manual, which will help you get the LU off and back on later:

http://web.ebscohost.com/serrc/pdf?...ba1c-2d48effdfab7@sessionmgr104&vid=4&hid=112

See page 147 for the beginning of the LU removal.

Download this soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.
