Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to winterize my boat myself to save on costs. Does anyone have any pics and a description of how to do this. I made a bad mistake last year by not winterizing which cracked my exhaust manifold. OUCH!!!!! I do not want to make the same mistake, but people have told me that winterization is very simple. My engine is a 2002 3.0GS with an SX outdrive.

Thanks for your time!

Mike

My first bit of advice would be to buy the Volvo Penta Sterndrive Manual and the Volvo Penta Engine Manual for your Model. These two manuals explain exactly what is required for winterization as well as what should be done at what hours.

Basically drain the outdrive of oil and refill. Remove the propellor and grease the shaft with Triple Guard Grease. Put the Prop back on or repair if necessary. Remove the drive and check the bellows and exhaust bellow replace if necessary. Grease the Gimbal bearing and turn it by hand getting all the old grease out. Check the alignment of the engine. Check the U-Joint , Grease the splines on the drive with Triple Guard, put new engine oil on the O rings and put the drive back on.

Ran the engine until warm, drained the oil , put new oil / filter / fuel filter ran and rechecked oil. Checked compression , checked vacuum. Ran fogging oil through the engine. Drained the block , hoses , manifold as per the manual and left the engine dry. Removed the impellor and put all bits into a plastic bag tied to the steering wheel.

The url below will show you parts diagrams which you may find useful

http://volvopentaparts.stemtostern.com/VolvoDiagrams/volvo_penta_parts.asp

Have fun

Chris

In my manual it shows that to drain the cooling system in a 3.0GS you need to remove from the starboard side the large hose at the circulating pump and from the port side remove the exhaust manifold drain plug and the cylinder block drain plug. In the photo these two plugs are shown right by each other.

Make sure the engine is horizontal by raising or lowering the bow.
