Hi

I have a Mariner 1988 3 cylinder 60HP oil injection engine.

I have noticed by the top cylinder No1 there is a 4inch piece of wire which appears to go straight into the engine block approx 1/2 inch to the right of the spark plug, this wire is not on any of the other cylinders. The other end is disconnected, it appears it could just be an earth, there is an earth nearby to the frame which is within reach but there are also other connections where it could also reach. In the absence of a manual (I know, but I do have one on order) does anyone know what this wire is, engine runs fine without it being connected.

also

I note from recent messages that the engine should have a thermostat, when I purchased my engine couple of months back the water jacket was removed for inspection, new gaskets were used when replacing, I believe they went on dry. At the time no thermostats were in stock so one was not put back in. I believe it may be a good idea to get a thermostat, can I re-use the gaskets, provided they are still in good shape or do I need new ones again (£35 not cheap).

Thanks in advance for your help.
