wire for trolling motor

I just picked up a trolling motor. I have to extend the power wire as it is not long enough to reach the battery. The wire on it now is 6 gauge and all I have here is 10 gauge. Will this make a difference? Also do most people take the trolling motor off the boat so it's not exposed to weather? Any help would be great. Thanks MIKE

10 gauge is not enough for any trolling motor, the distance you have to run the wire and the current demand on the battery will determine your minimum wire size.

I would stick with 6 AWG for the entire length as a minimum.
