Wire going from Coil to Tach grounding coil?

The boat has been off the water for a while, one thing after another. Stearn drive gears, Bellows tear (major intake of water in boat, ie without foam would have sunk), exhaust crack leak, impeller replacement etc...

After last job of replacing impeller she starts right up. I'm running her on muffs. I let it run for maybe a minute on idle then try to shift into gear. Stall. May have been a bit slow on idle? At any rate I get my timing gun setup to double check timing and try to start...turns over but no start. How odd it had just started easily.

OK got fuel and air lets look at spark...nope no spark. Go through testing and find I get no power on the point/condenser side of coil. Keep going through troubleshooting guide. remove the wires from output side of coil. OK, now have power. Replace wire going to points/condenser OK, now get alternating power like I should. Add grey wire and no more power.

So I look at diagram included as attachment and see it says sender to tach. So this should just be how the tach is measuring revs right? Connection should not be needed to start boat right?

Bonus question. The fact it stalled putting it into gear, does that point to anything other than maybe engine speed was too low?

If the shift interupter is activated, it will kill spark but then there should be 3 wires on the neg side of the coil. the points wire and the shift interrupt and tach

AS the Doc said the interrupter is stopping the engine because of a bind in the lower shift cable. Disconnect the lower cable and re-connect the tach wire. Maybe when the lower unit was reinstalled the link between the lower shift shaft and bronze shift lever on the upper housing did not line up.

Thanks for replies, but reality is my setup, as seen in the pic, matches the schematic I have shown. There is no additional grey wire on the neg side of the coil as shown in your pic. Therefore I'm having difficulty relating the replies to my situation.

Looks like on mine the shift interrupter goes to the starter slave solenoid and makes sense as if i am in gear it will not engage starter.

With this in mind does it change responses?

The neutral safety that prevents starting in gear in is the control box, it prevents the starter from turning.
The shift interrupter is connected to the shift cables, to kill the ign when coming out of gear in the water. If activated from a sticky shift cable it will kill the spark

Thanks. I was able to get into it today and sure enough I had an issue with the shift. Had to take the stern drive off to remedy and found the following in the lower chamber. I'm guessing these are flaps from the exhaust?

So if I only go fresh water are these important to replace? I find it odd that they are like they are. Don't look like anything broke or anything...

Ayuh,...... Freshwater, or salt don't matter,....
the shutters prevent water from back-washin' into the cylinders which causes hydro-lock, which bends connectin' rods, pistons, etc......

The shutters were encased in rubber, which no doubt burnt off durin' a no water flow situation,.....
