I have a 1984 Mariner 60hp 3cyl.
Im having issues with the electrical parts on the motor.
Most of the wires have rotted coming from the stator and the trigger.
I want to know, if I pull the fly wheel off can I cut the wires and solder on some new ones?(make my own wiring harness)

I was able to get it running yesterday when I changed the rectifier, but since then, a wire has broken that comes from the trigger to the switch box. So for now the motor wont run. It did let me know the stator and trigger are working, they just have bad wires.

Let me know what you think, Thanks

yes it,s possible if there is enough good wire to solder too. Keep as much of the old wire as you can thus if it corrodes again another fix can be made. Make sure the wires are well coated. They sell at wall mart a liquid tape. I,ve never tried it but you would need something like that to coat the solder job.

You can try it, it might work for a short while, but it will fail. The wires are badly corroded right up into the insides of the trigger and stator, guaranteed.

In the 70's and 80's, Mercury OEM used crappy insulator compound material that always fails. Even in New Old Stock parts sitting on the shelf, the insulator has crumbled and the wires have corroded, just from contact with the air. No joke.

The best bet is to replace your trigger and stator, and to use CDI or somesuch newer aftermarket, NOT NOS OEM parts.

I was worried that would be the case. The exposed parts of the wires are very corroded. only certen colors, especially the yellow
Is there a preferred supplier for the stator / trigger for a good price?
Can these be rebuilt for cheaper?
