Can you use a wireless router to link two laptops and have one laptop connected to the internet via dialup and the other laptop share the internet connection.

Thanks, Ken
It's my understanding that to use a wireless internet router, you need broadband. If you had broadband though, both laptops can use the same signal to access the internet. Hope this helps.
Yup, you sure can. You need something like this:

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/review/smc-7004wbr.asp

or this:

http://www.hawkingtech.com/prodSpec.php?ProdID=98

A cheaper, but more challenging, solution could be to set one laptop up with internet connection sharing in Windows as long as both are 98 or better then add a couple wireless cards in Ad-Hoc mode to connect wirelessly.

Keep in mind that the serial ported router typically will not work with AOL, NetZero. Earthlink, etc that use a special dialer software.
No, I just have a PCMCIA modem.

I have had two laptops sharing one dial up via a parallel cable connection. I just wanted to make this same connection but wireless.

Thanks for the help,

Ken
Did a bit of research for you. The older SMC or Hawkings may not be available any more, but looks like DLink makes a newer model. It is pricier than your standard Wi-Fi router, but not horribly so at $140 for a G router. You can find it at Amazon or newegg.com. Here's the link to amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...56961-3553445?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

You definetly want to verify with D-Link ( http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=274 ) that this route will do what you want, but I downloaded the manual while waiting on something for work and it says "com port provides serial connection for a backup analog dial-up modem" Sounds like you have a permanently failing broadbang connection to me

Do you already have an external serial modem?
I used a product from sygate for internet conection sharing, worked great, very easy to set up (unlike micros~t stuff). one server and up to 4 clients on the basic lisence. was about $30 at the time and they had a 30 day trial for it.
We used Sygate at the Elementry school I was helping with for a year to share out their modem connection... They finally have DSL, router etc now..

Personally, If I wanted to acomplish this it would be via windows internet sharing.
