1997 75 HP merc. 3 cyl. Oil injected, tilt 2 stroke. Finally solved the no spark problem. I found (after 2 months) the two yellow wires from the stator to the regulator/rectifier fried and shorted together. After separating the two and shrink wrapping then up, all is well with my motor. Only thing is, I have two wires at the bottom of the motor that ar hanging loose. one tan (w/ female connector) and one dark brown with a white stipe (w/ male connector. The tan one runs up to the control box and is disconnected. Is this the tach wire? Does this tan wire connect to the dark brown w/ white stripe at the motor? I don't know if I disconnected the two or if they were always disconnected. My new manual does not show either of the two wires. HELP!!! Thanks in advance for replies. Dennis G.

Those are gauge wires. The brown with the white stripe would be the sender wire for a trim gauge. The tan one is intended for a temperature sender, but you could use it for any sender. If the gauges ain't there, they do nothing.

Check your battery connections. The yellows may have overheated from corrosion at those bullet connections. But believe it or not they can do that from loose and/or corroded battery connections. Crank on those wingnuts with a pliers. I prefer to replace them with stainless locknuts. That way you have to use a wrench. Wingnuts are the number one cause of charging system failures. 99% of boaters think that finger-tight is enough. Not!
