wiring a bilge pump

hey guys, ok, im new at boating, ive recently purchased a 1992, inline 4 mercury classic, 40 hp<br />and i have also purchase a brand new lund 1650 rebel tiller, which already comes with a bilge pump. now, for this boat, im only looking to run the bilge pump off of a single battery, now how would i wire this up to the motor? do i need some kind of alternator, or generator? any thourough explination for this would be greatly appreciated, because i am new at this, and i want to do it right

If your engine is electric start you have an alternator on the engine.You should run bilge pump off of your battery. You will have to run it through a switch unless you want pump running constantly.<br /><br /> Jim

ok, i got you there, but my motor is manual start, so how will i hook the battery up to the engine, to keep the battery charged?<br />thanks

Most generally, manual start engines don't have a charging system on them Green. Bilge pumps don't suck that much juice and the battery will last a long time. Just check it now and then and trickle charge when needed.<br /><br />Some manufacturers of engines offer charge kits you can put on and it don't make any difference if it's electric or manual start.<br /><br />Post your engine hp and year (model number would be great) and maybe we can see if a charging kit is available for your engine.<br /><br />Thanks.

is there not a stator on this engine that can keep the battery charged enough to run a bilge pump, or will i have to buy like a charging kit for it, like what will the kit be,some sort of belt drive alternator?

and ps,if i put a charging kit on, would it be charged at all times, is it better just to leave the battery the way it is,because i would rather keep the battery charged, rather than replacing it constantly
