i recently bought a 1998 mariner 25 hp 2s outboard, which had been sitting around for some time. since the owner not longer had the key to the quicksilver shifter/throttle/starter/kill switch unit. i bought a new one from west marine and installed it. i do not however think i installed it correctly. i got starter and run and choke right since they all funtion at the same time. when i finally got it started the buzzer seemed to keep running (granted the engine only ran for 5 seconds max) and when i turned the key to off it didn't stop, i had to pull the kill swith (which did work). is this normal? on the inboards that ive had turning the key to off wont stop the engine, im just wondering if this is the same for outboards like this one. it's electric start and i got an oem replacement switch by sierra that off/run/start/push to choke. does anyone know what wire colors should be at what terminal?
thanks for the help
alex

nope.

starter is by itself, at the LAST turn of the key. the choke, ignition and all other acc are at the first turn of the key, and when its off, it should go to the " m" terminal, this GROUNDING out the ignition, therfore turning off the motor.

do what i did. i disconnected the key switch and through it away..they are useless!!!... watch this 5 second video to see what i did/..... http://www.zippyvideos.com/6281090017724.html

i should have said at the right time. this is what happens. when the switch is turned once clockwise, the horn sounds , all the way over starter goes, pushed in, a little solenoid on or abouts the carb pushes, hafta assume this is choke
