Wiring/control problems HELP NEEDED AGAIN 4 jan 2009

At first i am sorry for my bad English but that is my first language is Dutch. I am a student from Holland with a few problems with mounting on my new controls. I have a 50hp mercury thunderbolt from 1965 where i want to hook up my fathers old (new) mercury 881170A20 control but i am having some problems connecting it. The old Merc has a 6 pin connector and the new control has 7 pins. I now that i can buy a conversion cable but i am just a poor student that wants a litlle fun with his boat and the conversion cable is very expensive.

Can somenone help me hooking up the new control to my old Merc? Does somenone now wich wires i have to connect to make everthing work fine?

Is there a place where i can find a manual or wiring diagram of this controlunit?

Wich cables are for what kind of purpase?

I now i ask a lot of questions but this forum is as a supose the best place on internet to find the answers.

I have allready done that, the wiring of the old merc i have i could understand but the wiring of the control i don't.

I need a little help with it or if someone could tell me wich wires i have to connect to eachother that would be really great.

By the way i have the old female connector of my father past away merc also, so i have the male connecter of the cable from the control and the connector that was on the old motor of my father.

Maybe this would make a difference.

Do you know what year model your fathers motor is?

The problem is, old mercs and new(ish) mercs use a different wire color code. I can tell you what the conversion is but I need to know the year of your fathers merc.

I don't now what year his merc was and doesn't now it either, we don't have it anymore so can't look for it also.

The only thing i now is that the control unit has the type number 881170A20
and that my old merc where i want to hook up the control is a 50hp mercury thunderbolt with modelyear 64-65.

That control box has the trim switch built in and it is post 1993. Was your old control box a double or single lever type?

I did a quick internet search of the control's part number and found the below description. I can't interpret this description with certainty, but it seems that a wiring diagram for your control could be found in a shop manual for any recent year model Merc outboard. I believe it is also named "MSC 4000 Side Mount Electric with Trim".

881170A20 is an original equipment Mercury Marine single lever side SURFACE mount control box for power trim outboard applications.Box comes with 20 ft. harness and built in warning horn. Fits all current Mercury/Mariner outboards(with integral trim) and 1993 and newer force outboards 40hp and highter, utilizing Mercury style cables(with power trim).

His new control box has the now 'standard' merc wire color code, schematics are readily available. His old 50 merc uses a different color code. In fact, it changes yet again depending on whether it is a single or double lever type.

It was a single lever control box that had a smaller throttle lever.

The only different thing about the new controller against the controller on the internetsite you siad is that on my controller there stands "quicksilver" on it. For the rest of it it is identical.

Black - All Ground
Brown - Reference Electrode MerCathode System
Orange - Anode Electrode MerCathode System
Lt. Blue/White Stripe - Trim UP Switch
Lt. Green/White Stripe - Trim DOWN Switch
Brown/White Stripe - Trim Sender to Trim Gauge
Purple/White Stripe - Trim "Trailer" Switch
Gray - Tachometer Signal
Black/Yellow Stripe - Shorting or Stop Circuit
Pink - Fuel Sender to Gauge
Red - Unprotected Wire from Battery
Red/Purple Stripe - Protected (Fused) Wire from Battery
Red/Purple Stripe - Protected (12 Volt +) to Trim Panel Control
Purple - Ignition (Switch) to 12 Volt Positive
Tan - Temperature Switch to Warning Horn
Tan - Temperature Sender to Temperature Gauge
Tan/Blue Stripe - Temperature Switch to Warning Horn
Yellow - Starter Solenoid to Starter Motor
Yellow - Stator to Regulator (Charging Circuit)
Yellow/Red Stripe - Start Switch to Start Solenoid to Neutral Start Switch
Yellow/Black Stripe - Choke (Enrichener System)

Ok this was what i was looking for. The little cable thats on the new control where is this one for, can i use it in cobination with my motor or should i just let it hang loose?

If i want to hook up a car radio wich wire of the control do i use then.

Here i am again!

I recently opened up the cable from my control box and found the following wires:

Blue with a with stripe
Green with a white stripe
Black with a white stripe
Yellow wit a red stripe
Yellow with a black stripe
Black with a yellow stripe
Brown with a blue stripe
Grey
Purple
Black
Brown
Red

It maybe stupid to ask again but i want to now for sure before i do something wrong.

Which wire iis for what? And on which wire does it go on my 5 pin mercury 500 from the early sixties.

Can anyone help me for the last time please?

The only wire you need for that engine are
Black to grond
Red to the hot side of the aanzet solenoid
Black/yellow to the mag
Yellow red to the stimuleringsmiddel terminal on the solenoid
Yellow/black to the vernauwing
The rest aren't use on your engine.

solenoid is thecontrol to make starter work,,, think and do 1 wire at a time and it will come easy to you,,good luck

The picture don't show much other that one side of a 50HP. Heres a wiring diagram with all the parts named the only thing that might confuse you is in the diagram the solinoid is not attached directly to the starter as it is on your motor.

The day has arrived that i am planning to test my engine.

I have hooked up the wires as shown in the following picture like LADIES said.

Is this all right? Can someone confirm that!

I find it a bit scarey to test it because i don't wannablow the engine.

I wanna now for sure so please help.

The colours of the wires that i wrote on the picture myself are the colours of my quicksilver controller.
