Hello. I am looking for the wiring schematics for my 1985 Chaparral 234. I have an issue with the gas gauge and wanted to check if a potentially have a short. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Wiring Diagram 1985 Chaparral 234

I am looking to troubleshoot an issue with the gas gauge in my instrument panel. It has power to it, 12 volts like it should but when I connect the gauge it says the tank is full which is not the case. I bought a new fuel sensor and hooked it up and it still went straight to full. We have jumped out the system in a multitude of ways trying to see if there is a short and can not seem to find the problem. It has a 1995 (I think that is the year, maybe 1997) Mercruiser 225 but I have been told that it is nothing to do with the engine. All of my other instruments are working correctly so not sure what my issue is. I am usually pretty good with figuring out electrical issues, but my buddy and I are both stumped on this one. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Ayuh,.... To test a gas gauge, ya put power to it, 'n ground out the sender, it Pegs Full....

Yer Sender wire at the dash is goin' to Ground....
Have ya metered the sender wire at the dash,..??

The other possibility is the gauge is Bad...

It doesn't matter what engine/drive you have because it is not related to the fuel gauge in any way. Three parts to the system. Sender in the tank, the wire between it and the gauge, and the gauge itself. Here is a diagram of the system (again). You replaced the sender but are you sure the swing arm is not hanging up on something? If that's ok, disconnect the wire from the gauge and measure the resistance. If you know how much fuel is in the tank (roughly is close enough), the resistance should be 240 ohms = empty, 109 ohms = 1/2 and 33 ohms = full.
