Wiring/Electrical Problems!!!

I have a 97 Johnson Ocean Runner that was rebuilt last fall. About 4 hours into the breakin the stator went. Before the stator went, I had several problems such as 1) the engine checkout lights not coming on properly when I put the key in and 2) the engine not starting at times.

The stator was replaced by the rebuilder (at no cost to me). When I picked up my boat he told me that my batteries were pretty drained (and that either they are crappy batteries or I may have a short somewhere).

I then winterized the boat (this included pulling the batteries).

After a long tough winter I put the boat in the driveway today and started her up. I had to play with the wires a little in order to get current. It took about three cranks for the engine to turn over. It then ran fine. I then let her run for about 5 minutes.

Several hours later I tried starting her up again. I put the key in the ignition and I started to have the "engine checkout lights" not coming on. I played around with it a little. The engine turned over after several tries.

I am no electrical genius, but I can't help but think that I have a wiring/short problem (if not something worse). I will probably bring it to a local marina within the next week, but I would appreciate any ideas that you may have.

Regards,

PEB

Before bringing it anywhere I would try starting with a fresh and fully charged battery.

I did start with two freshly charged batteries.

Sounds like you found the problem area when you wiggled the wires and she started, I would check for loose or corroded connections in that area first.

Another thing that could cause that problem is the solinoid for the starter. If it hasn't been replaced in the past 3 to 5 years, it can easily cause an intermitent cranking problem.
Though I'm not sure about your engine check out lights being related....
