Had a 12/24v omc trolling motor on my boat. It had three wires in the plug- white, red, and black. Coming off my batteries I have a white (positive) and a black, on the other battery I have a red and black. All the wires go to the front of the boat to a 4 hole receptacle. Bought a motorguide 24v and it had the same 4 prong plug as my omc already on it and it got power fine. Returned the motorguide and now have a minn kota maxxium 24v. The motor only has two wires on it and no plug. Bought a new 4 prong plug, if I put neg to neg and the positive to the 24v hole (marked on the plug) would this be correct or would I only be using one battery?
If that is correct does that mean there is a jumper or something on the receptacle that is on the boat? Thanks

Use a meter and measure the voltage at the plug from neg to 24V. If you have 24V you are ready to go. If not get back to us and we can tell you what to do.

Re: wiring from 12/24v to 24v

Diggs – my boat is 24v everything, everywhere, except when I step down the voltage for the VHF. Two wires, one [+] and one [-], just like any 12v, but smaller. The higher voltage means less amps are needed to get the job done, hence a smaller wire can be used with 24v than can be used with 12v. If you have wiring in place for 12vdc, you are good to go for 24vdc, but NOT the other way around. 24v wiring will not necessarily support 12v applications.

4-prongs? You only need two, one for each wire, like on the wires of your tm. Red is the norm for [+] and black or yellow is the norm for [-]. Connect the [-] to [-] as you suggested, take you pick on which pair to use for the [+] to [+] prong. You can leave the other two prongs unused.

Edit: for a 24v tm you need a pair of batteries in series:

bat1[-] to bat2[+]
bat1[+] to tm [+]
bat2[-] to tm [-]

When reading the voltage across bat1[+] and bat2[-] you should get 24v. those are the critters you hook up to your 24v tm wires.

Re: wiring from 12/24v to 24v

Thanks guys for the help, I did a voltage test and had 24v at the plug when plugged in.
I guess if it is not broke don't mess with it.
The only thing I guessing is that there must be a jumper in the receptacle. My batteries are not wired like you said for some reason. Each terminal has its own wire going to the front receptacle. But yet i get 24v at the plug. I disconnected each battery, one at a time and had no reading at all at the plug. When both connected got the 24v reading again.
Im taking this that i am fine the way i am but not quite sure how. Thanks diggs
