I am going to put my 1971 50 HP evinrude on a new 1760 F&F aluminum boat I am having built. My evinrude has console steering and controls so I opted for a center console. This rig will be for duckhunting and rather than look for the keys at 2:00 am I want to wire the ignition to toggles and a pushbutton start. Never want to worry about forgetting or loosing the boat key.

My question is how to wire it to the switches, and if it can even be done.

I can probably work it out myself, but was wondering if there is anything I should watch out for.

Here is how the back of the switch is wired, looking at it from behind:

A = 2 black wires, one goes to main harness back to engine, the other goes to a ground on the control box.

B = large red wire with a spiral white stripe, it is a constant hot, power source. Goes into main harness.

C = smaller black wire with a thin yellow stripe. it goes into main harness.

D = white wire, only hot when ignition is in "start" position.

E = 3 purple wires, one goes to choke, one goes to buzzer, and a larger one goes to the selectric shift. These are hot with the ignition in the "run" position.

Could these be wired to a toggle switch or two and then a pushbutton starter switch?

Thanks, Gary
Looks like you should be able to do it with:
1-DPDT Heavy Duty Toggle Switch
1-N.O. Push Button Switch

I'm not sure what wire C is...(smaller black wire with a thin yellow stripe) Kill wire for powerpack?? If it is, yes, above parts should work.

Re: Wiring gurus

hello yep
the blacks and the black yellow are grounded at shut off. they must be ungrounded to restart. the purple wires are all ign or choke or shift functions. the shift and buzzer are hot with the key on
the choke purple/white is only hot when the choke lever is depressed. some of the 71 50's had a funny auto choke setup that had a hot purple yellow I think.
so its doable just how much effort do you want to put out. carefully study the choke wiring as well as the other wiring.
or just fasten the key to the box with leader wire.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Wiring gurus

Sorry in advance for this crude drawing. I'll reply on others to verify wiring, but from what you describe, this should work.
