Bought a 2012 Yamaha 70 HP. Wanted to install a few gauges because my old ones are not compatible now.

Not familiar with the new harnesses for this motor. I was wondering if I have the dealer install the electrical harness and run it to the helm how easy would it be for me to buy the gauges I like and install them myself?

Is it like quick connects you find in cars where I can just plug them in or is there more to it?

Thanks fellas.

Re: Wiring Harness and gauge installation

Aftermarket gauges are not usually plug & play. They typically have threaded studs so you need ring terminals on the harness. A Yamaha harness would likely have plugs on the harness to plug into Yamaha gauges. Why not install the gauges you want and have the installer connect them. Keep in mind that each gauge needs +12 volts, ground, a light connection for the internal light, and in the case of temperature, tach and fuel gauges a connection from the sending unit. If all you install is a speedo, tach, fuel and voltmeter, the only sender required is for the fuel gauge and that sender is in the fuel tank and has nothing to do with the engine harness. The speedo and Voltmeter need only +12 volts and ground and the internal light. The tach also has +12 volt, ground and light connections but the "sense" signal comes from the charging system on the engine. That signal is generally available at the shift/throttle control. If you are electrically challenged, then having someone do the complete install is highly recommended.
