Wiring Harness Inspection

My motor is a 1999 90HP 2 stroke 90C, and I notice in my Yamaha Manual it says to unplug, inspect and clean all those connector pins inside that big black rubber wiring connector just inside the cowling. I've never done this and think "maybe let the sleeping dog lay", since I've had no problems electrical or mechanical so far. Is this something that should be done? What do you guys do about this?

Re: Wiring Harness Inspection

It sort of depends on the operating conditions and how well the plug is sealed. It would not hurt to unplug and then reconnect the connector several times just to "burnish" the contacts. If there is any leakage whatsoever in this connection corrosion can occur and eventually bite you. There is certainly a low chance this will ever happen, but I've seen it happen and have had it happen so I don't consider it overkill at all -- just good practice (once a year at the beginning of the season for example).

Thanks, maybe carefully unplug it, spray with WD-40, clean with toothbrush, then an air hose, plug it back in? Guess a saltwater motor might be even more important to do this?
