Wiring Problem

I just received a motor for my boat. I believe it is from the 1950's or early 60's. I was told it is a 33 horse Evinrude. When I went to attach the positive & negative cables to the battery the starter started to operate. There are also two small wires that are taped to the cables, I assume that they are for a key start switch. The two smaller wires where not touching anything when I tried to attach the battery cables. Can any one help me here?

Re: Wiring Problem

You're right. Those two wires should connect to the starter switch. The other ends should attach to the two small terminals on the starter solenoid.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Wiring Problem

But why is the starter "starting"????? Does anyone know if the Evinrudes in the 50's or 60's had a independent solenoid?

Re: Wiring Problem

The solenoid often goes on the boat on those engines, up till '67 I think. You may not have one if you don't see one under the cowl. It should be a black cylindrical thing wired to the post on the starter. If it's not there, I think you have your answer.
Trace the two small wires back. I bet you they go to the armature plate (where the spark plug wires come from). If so, you connect those two wires together to shut off the engine. Careful of them while it's running - they bite.

Re: Wiring Problem

The older Johnson/Evinrude outboards had a harness going from the motor to a junction box that contained the starter solenoid and a junction strip for connecting the wires to with fuses. From the juncton box a wire would then run to the switch at the dash. If you need pics of the box and harnesses let me know. I have a few here I can take pics of and send. Just e-mail me at bhalsdorf@access4less.net and let me know.
