Alright i just got a new project boat real cheap, the only prblem is engine wiring is a complete mess, what is the simplist way to hook up the engine to start and make sure it runs along with the sterndrive is in ok shape? it is a 165 inline six mercruiser motor. bear in mind this will eventually be completly redone but i want the simplist fastest way to start from scratch the the engine wiring to make sure it runs and to try to run the sterndrive. i'd probably be cuting out the shift cutout switch mounted on the transom to test it any ideas and opinions will help.

Re: wiring question

Disconnect the throttle cable fron the carb, connect a clean fuel source to the fuel pump, connect a hose to the drive, locate the yellow/with red tracer wire on the starter and connect a jumper to it.If it has been sitting a long time I would remove the plugs and put a shot o WD40 in each cylinder and leave the plugs out.Ck,oil level and condition, with the drive in neutral and a hot batt connected, touch the starter jumper to the + batt, term and watch out!If it turns fine, crank it for bout 10 seconds, stop, look down the carb(while not crankin)and pump the gas a few times and sea if you get a shot out the acc.pump.If so,put the plugs back in(with plug wires on),water on,connect a jumper to the + term. of the coil and other end to the batt+.Now the truth! jump the starter again while pumping the gas,VROOOOOM???
