Ok I read the post(s) about using a Radio shack rectifier to replace a faulty OEM unit. Mine failed all the tests so I picked up the Radio shack 25 Amp unit (Part# 276-1185) rated at 50v AND 25 aMPS FOR $3.50- what steal if it works. But it has 4 posts/connectors. I assume the stator leads go to the AC posts but which post is the other connection. I would assume the "+" post is to the electical system correct? THen what do I do if anything with the "-" post? Connect it to ground maybe using one of the mounting screws? This seems to be most like the original setup given the description in the service manual but was hoping for more certainity on this. Wish I had known not to start the motr with out the battery firmly connected or I wouldn;t be in this fix now. Live and learn eh!
Thanks in advance for any help
Mike

You have the connections figured out correctly. Plus to the electrical system and negative to ground.

Re: Wiring Radio Shack Rectifier-76 7.5HP

On mine I ran the negative wire over to the starter bolt where the negative battery cable attaches.

I did the same thing, ran the motor with no batt. I 'knew' better. I had read it in my 20hp's owners manual but when I picked up a 25hp with a bad foot I didn't even think about it until after I had ran the motor on the stand. About 4 hours later this vision starts forming in the dark recesses of my brain. The vision was the passage in the 20hp book about not running an E-start motor without having a batt hooked up. Doh !.

The worst thing about being human is not knowing what stupid thing you are going to do next :(
