wiring under dash

Reposted from the General Boating section:

I'm looking for help identifying the various wires that are connected to the bus under the dashboard of my 1990 2651 Sunbridge. I plan to hook up a GPS unit and need to know how to connect the black and red wires. I presume most boaters with GPS on the dash have them connected to the bus underneath, but with all these wires I'm not sure where or how to connect them. There don't appear to be any extra slots on the bus to connect accessories.

Can anybody help me sort out this jumble? Many thanks.

[colour=blue]I seriously doubt that what we are seeing in the picture is factory fitted wiring, in which case the only way to find out what goes where is to trace each wire to it's respective accessory.

There is another issue, you already have 14 circuits (soon to be 15) coming off one battery feed. Might be time to beef up the supply and tidy up the birds nest - and install some protection.

That looks pretty factory to me. I owned a Bayliner once of similar vintage and looks identical

I personally like to run GPS power on its own power lead straight from the battery with a fuse back there. You avoid all sorts of problems with noise on your power that way.

Take two wires, chuck them in a drill, have someone hold the other end and operate the drill until you get a nice twist. You will have a nice twisted power/ground pair for your GPS.

If that is too far or inconvenient, you can add another fuse block off the one you have. There will be a very thick red wire that will be powering that fuse block. Add another wire to that connection of similar guage to the second fuse block.

[colour=blue]That mess is factory? Do you (as consumers) accept that?

The fuse panel looks factory, but there's added stuff and wires. Besides that, if you check the other post, there is an additional fuse panel that uses glass fuses that is definately not factory. That added more wires to the birds nest.

Time to get out a voltmeter / ohmmeter and put everything back together correctly.

Here's the other picture in his other post:
