I have a 23ft cuddy and when i bought it, it has a ugly teal bottom paint, probably looked good when it was fresh but now its faded and comming off. it is only one layer of paint. i wish it wasnt there and was nice shiny hull, it stays on the trailer, never in water more than 24hrs. what would be my best bet? i would love to just take it off but i hear the gelcoat is really scuffed up to apply it. i would paint the bottom white to match but the boat is an off white or maybe just alittle dingy from being 13 years old so i dont know how well it would match. any ideas?

Look around for someone who does soda blasting and have it removed.

Removing it leave will a funlky looking bottom. I ended up painting my bottom with black Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote. When it started to "mark" I used a scotchbrite pad and scrubbed the area which brought the color back out. It lasted about 4 years before I had to repaint.

I had that same crap on my last boat. I would soda blast it off and then wet sand the bottom to a nice shine. Tons of work but it can look new again. I sold mine with the paint half on and half gone and do not know what the new owner did with it. Drove me nuts, but my wife just called me anal. It all depends on how long you want to keep the boat and how much you like it. I was ready for a new one and didn't want to hassle with the paint in the old one. If you do decide to do it, do not try sanding it, you will just jack up the gel-coat. Pay the money for soda blasting and then just take it one square foot at a time and it will be looking good in no time.

Re: Wish the bottom paint wasnt there

I bought a project hull that had some old nasty looking bottom paint on it. I took a 1 inch putty knife and scrapped it off. Wet sanded with a 1000, then again with a 2000, then buffered on a 3M Restore then a 3M polish. Glass! :D One heck of alot of work, yes, but I only had 26 dollars in the paper, buff pad and 3M products. I'm not finished, but am doing it in workable sections. The funest part is wet sading the very bottom. Water and paint running down you arms onto your chest, lieng on the ground in a pool of water. That doesn't sound really smart does it. But what I have done so far sure does look great!!!

I understand Peel Away works pretty well too. Searched here in iboats, but didn't find it . . .

Re: Wish the bottom paint wasnt there

I share your pain. I have a Sea Ray 230 that originally had a painted bottom (bought it used)- same color as yours actually. I have sanded and re-painted mine for several years now. The latest is with Bottom Shield from West Marine and holds up pretty good. I've only had to touch up for the last couple of years. Couple of hours with a 3" roller and it's good for another year or so.
It's a PITA, but that's where we are!
Next one - NO PAINT!!!!!!

Trilux Interstrip is a paint-stripping chemical treatment that will peel ff paint, but you may find an ugly sanded hull underneath...or you may find an unsanded but ugly-looking no-sand-primer coat...

You may try it in a spot to see what's under the layers of paint...

Although I only see the shot of the stern, it's not that bad. I guess it's only an eyesore when on the trailer (most of the time I imagine), but when she's in the water who cares? Don't park her in the front yard.

Same way. Mine had to go!!!! Unlike yourself, I am planning to keep mine for 4 to 5 years. Want to enjoy my rebuild cost and learning curve then upgrade. With you wanting to trade soon, thats tough.

It's not environmentally sound but there is a somewhat easy way to remove it. The spray type oven cleaner that's caustic and has a terrible odor will loosen it up to where it can be easily blasted off with a pressure washer. It doesn't do a thing to paint or gel.
