175 Bayliner 175 3.0 litre engine. Year 1998

We will start winterizing our boat this weekend, using Don S witerizing checklist .A few years ago I did a complete upgrade to the fuel lines ,on this boat and installed new hose ,double clamps and shutoff valves for the kicker and the main 3.0litre engine. This year I was thinking about shutting off the gas valve, to the main engine ,and running the carb dry, rather than having gas sitting ,in it all winter.I would add the fuel stabilizer to the tank, also. My Merc Manual for the 6Hp kicker says to run the carb dry, which I have done. Do you think this is a good idea, or will it dry out the carb gaskets ???.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Clipper 800

Re: Witerizing Soon.

Personally, I would put some fuel stabilize and fogging oil in a remote tank, and run the engine on that while warming up for oil changes and fogging. This way you keep liquid in the carb and fuel pump which is a lot better than setting dry all winter and for a couple of years.
I started doing that because it was "How it's done" on MPI engines, and just decided it had to be good for any engine as well.
It's the regular amount of fuel stabilizer as stated in the directions on the bottle. Plus about 2 or 3 ounces of fogging oil per gallon of gas. Dump the rest of the mixture in the gas tank when done.
Haven't had carb problems for years doing this........ On LOTS of boats.
