Still working on isolating the sticking throttle arm when the flywheel is on. Pulled the flywheel off again and throttle arm is nice and smooth. noticed the armature plate is quite wobbly but the plate it mounts to is secure any ideas how to correct this? Could this armature plate be also causing the throttle arm to stick? 1966 40hp super seahorse. Thanks again to all who have replied and been helpful in my previous posts.

Re: wobbly armature plate

There's the wonderful, super simple and effective Joe Reeves patented wobbly armature plate fix:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=020981

It can cause the armature plate to stick as the coils get too close to the magnet in the flywheel. The sticking will go away when the engine is running though. ;)

This will really quiet the engine down too. Be sure to recheck your point gap after doing it.

Re: wobbly armature plate

Thank you Paul. Do you think this is also what might have been causing the throttle arm to stick when the flywheel is on?

Yes, it can certainly cause the throttle arm to stick. Having the ignition coils too far forward can too.
It's important to realize though that the sticking goes away when the engine is running, since the magnets in the flywheel are spinning.
