Won,t go in forward

My cousin has a 1969 Slick Craft with a cobra 1 out drive (straight 6 engine). Last night while fishing, he could not get it to go into forward. It will go to neutral or reverse.
He disconnected the cable to the out drive from the block in the back that makes the transfer to the shifter cable that goes to the controls (to try to shift it manually). It still would not shift to forward.
Dose this sound like a cable issue? or is it likely to be much more?
If it is the cable, how hard is that to change? He is a capable mechanic for most things.

You're going to have to be a little more specific.

Have a look at the "Adults Only" sticky above in the main forum list.

We need engine make and model, and drive make and model. Serial numbers help too since a lot of service manuals mention serial numbers.

You said Cobra. OMC didn't manufacture the Cobra until about 1986.

Generically, a shift cable problem is common. but there could also be other problems too.
