Wondering if this boat on CL might be a deal

I wasn't in the market for another boat but I occasionally skim Craigslist and I came across this ad that sounds like just maybe possibly a good deal-- he says he's not a boat guy and he just wants to get rid of it.

17'8" Browning Monte Carlo I/O with a "Rebuilt Mercruiser 4 cyl 120 horsepower & Mercruiser outdrive rebuilt spring of 2009". I'm an outboard guy so I don't know anything about this motor-- would a 120 be underpowered for an 18 footer? It doesn't say what year the boat is but from the looks of it, I'd guess late 70s-early 80s. Of course it could have any number of problems but what I can see in the ad looks...intriguing.

The ad's kind of funny to read-- I can't imagine why Mr. Crankypants hasn't sold it yet

They went out of business in 1980. Boat might be at the high end worth $700. If the engine was fully rebuilt as well as the lower end and with a trailer...might be worth $900. I would be concerned about a 30 year old boat with some "small patches".

Yeah, i saw the "small patches" line, and I'm fully aware the "solid floor" and transom could be rotten, and the "rebuilt" motor and outdrive could be junk. I was just wondering if $900 would be a great deal in the unlikely event I was to check it out and it was in solid shape. sounds like not...?

extremely underpowered. boat that weight needs a 4.3 v 6 minimum.

looks like it might be a pretty good buy if he was asking $300
