Just bought a 77 johnson 85 horse, Put a new fuel pump on, but it will not start cold, put a little gas or starting fluid in carbs and it takes right off and good for the rest of the day, but next day it will not start, acts like not chocking but why not?

Well, is the choke working? Make sure the manual lever is not set to "off" so the choke plates can't close. All the way up is off (if I remember right) the middle position lets you activate it from the control and down is manual "on".

Good luck!

That is what has me stumped, The butter flies seam to close, but it acts like no gas is coming in.

Are they closing completely? Have you pulled the front cover off to see or are you watching the plunger on the side?

Do you pump the bulb first? What spark plugs? (Please don't say "the right ones" tell us which ones you are using)

Good luck!

I have the same problem with a 76 135hp evinrude. The choke is working on mine and it still will not start cold without a shot of gas in the carb(drives me crazy). After that it runs good all day..Looks like I can follow your post!!!!
