Hey all I have a 1969 evinrude sportwin 9.5 hpIt has been running great for me with no trouble. Yesterday when I was out fishing I went to go to another spot and it wouldnt run unless I had the choke out. When I pushed it in the engine would die on me. I have never had this problem before.Anybody have any idea what it could be? Thanks, Andrew

It probably sucked a hunk of crud into the high speed jet. It is deep in the hole behind the hex head drain plug in the bottom of the carburetor.

Yeah, this is a classic symptom of a dirty carb.

The alcohol gas probably loosened up some crud and clogged up the carb.

Whats the best way to clean the carb guys? Do I really need to take it out or can I just spray some carb cleaner down it? First time I've owned an outboard dotn know crap about them.

You need to pull it apart, but it only takes about 45 minutes to do the whole thing, its pretty easy.

Alright thanks, I appreciate it. After i pull it apart what should I use to clean it though? Do I need to spray it with anything before I wipe it clean?

Take it apart, use carb cleaner spray. Make sure all the lil ports are clear. Buy a carb kit for it and change the gaskets. The kit is cheap. Re and Re takes longer that the actual cleaning of it.

Hey guys just took apart the carb and cleaned it. Looked pretty clean to me...Also sprayed the little ports. Gonna try it tomorrow morning in a trash can. Hopefully it isnt the fuel filter. I took that off and the little screen was clean as a whistle...
