Ok here we go, 79 Thompson 2.5L GM engine when I turn the key some thing is clicking. cant tell if it is the starter solenoid or the slave solenoid. but the motor will turn a little bit. Battery is at 11.7v when not in use. Had starter check at a shop they said it was good. checked alternator output while running it is 15v . battery voltage when running is 12.6v. checked resistance of wires from bat to ground, bat to starter, starter to slave sol. ,and slave sol. to ignition switch all less than .5 OHMS. If I put the battery charger on it it will start .I cant see why the starter wont turn the motor over with out the battery charger. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh the battery is only one year old.

Sure sounds like the battery is bad. Doesn't really matter how old it is. Is the battery a deep cycle or regular battery. You can take the battery to lots of places and have them checked. But if it starts with a charged on it I would really consider getting a new battery. Also make sure you have the correct cranking amp for the motor.

Yep, battery is dead. Charged is 12.7 no load, dead is 12.2 Yours is really dead. Charge it, test it or get a new one.

The battery charger is picking up where the dead battery is leaving off.

Thanks guys!! The battery is the only thing that I could think of. But I did not think that a 12volt battery could be dead at 11.8 volts.
