Won't start - relay assy?

88 Yamaha 200hp. When I try to start or raise / lower trim there is only a temporary clicking coming from the relay assembly. This is the point of where the main wires from the boat connect under the cowell.

Took the cover off this 2" x 3" box (which on Yamaha's parts diagram is called a "relay assy") and there are no fuses only connections. When I have someone turn it over or try to move the trim this box sounds like it is shorting out and it vibrates slightly. Do I need to replace or could it be something else?

Take the blue and green wires which run directly to the trim motor and hook a battery across them. Blue postive and green negative to raise and test the motor. reverse the wires for down. This will let you determine if the relay is bad.

Re: Won't start - relay assy?

I went directly to the green and blue wires where they come out of the trim motor and it worked like a charm last year. Starting to work on it again and today I did the same thing but after a couple of lifts and lowers it quit. It worked one minute and not the next. There isn't a fuse in the motor assembly is there? I'm not getting any movement or sound out of the trim motor.

Any way to rebuild these? Also someone told me once to hit it with a rubber hammer to move the brushes. Any suggestions on how to fix, rebuild or get a new trim motor? thanks

It can be rebuilt or replaced. Biggest problem is getting to it. Easiest way is to pull motor and one side of the clamp bracket to remove the trim motor.
