I have a 2005 fisher marine stick steering with a 40 hp 4 stroke that runs great. But the first time you turn it to start it won't start so you hi it the second time and it starts right up. It does this everytime that you start it. It never fails to start on the second time. I'm thinking its something with the timing. Had it in the shop they check everything but the timing. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Re: Won't start the first time

If the timing was way off it wouldn't start the second time either.
I have twins on my boat and the stbd motor does the same thing.
I turn it over till it coughs. Then I turn it over for a mili-second and it 's running. The other fires right up no problems.
I had an old Triumph motorcycle that I'd have to kick through once and the second time it was running.
That might be the way it's gonna run.J

Re: Won't start the first time

When I try to start it the first time the engine will not turn over. It sound like a dead battery. The engine will maybe turn a couple of inches then you try again and it will spin and start up. You turn it off and it does the same thing the next time. It just sound like to much compression. I'm a pretty good auto mech. but ai'm not smarter that a fifth grader on outboard.
Thanks Commander

you dont have an engine problem, you have a battery or cable problem.

Re: Won't start the first time

How do the brushes look in the starter? They are just like an automotive starter. If they get dirty, rusty, or the brushes fail then they start to develop a dead spot, or in your case a weak spot that is on its way to being a dead spot. I would remove the starter and clean the inside of the housing with a high flashpoint electrical motor cleaner, not WD-40 or break cleaner. It needs to be for electrical motors. You would be suprized how much stuff builds up in there. And before you write off a battery problem go have them load tested, it sounds like you have a power delivery problem, ie bad battery, loose/broken cables, corrosion, dirty brushes in the starter.

Re: Won't start the first time

Jump the two posts on the solenoid if it turns each time thats the issue... if it does the same could be starter.

ether way you would know if its push button or key switch.

Remove the plugs and do a compression test. Before you do anything else.J
