I'm still trying to start my 1959 35hp Johnson
It starts and runs a few seconds then quits. It has LOTS of spark. But when I check the plugs they are both bone dry. I can see the clear glass gas filter is full of gas. And the primer bulb is hard. So why is there no gas on the plugs?

Yup, carb cleaning/rebuilding is in order. Once this is done, set the low speed needle out 1.5 turns and the high speed needle out 3/4 turn to start.

Float, float valve and seat, nozzle gasket, carb bowl gasket, packing for the needle valves. Get a carb kit, available here at Iboats 18-7024. That doesn't include the float.

How do I know if it needs a new float?
if it doesnt float when placed on gas, sounds more like a sticky valve to me, or someone has installed it wrong and its closing the valve far too early

Original float would have been cork, and if the original is still in there, it probably needs to be replaced. They lose their coating and get black and flaky and clog up the carb.
