I have a 89 sunbird with a 4.3 omc cobra just bought it. First time I took it out it ran like a champ. Today. It started just fine, cold, then if I shut it off and turn it omit ran great. But if I let it sit for 15-20 min it wouldn't start. Did it to me twice. Both times I checked to see if water got in the cylinder so I took the spark plug out and turn it over couple times and it fired. So I immediately shut it off put the plug in and it fired right up. What could be causing this?? And how do I fix it? Thank u!

Is it points or efi ignition does it have a ignition control modual. it sound like it is stalling wene it gets warm and wene it kools down it runs just finr until it get warm again. if that the case just replace the icm and you will be fine.

It's got points not a efi. Kinda was thinking the choke was sticking. But not sure

If it helps also almost immediately after I try starting it I smell gas after letting it sit for 20 min or so. That's what led me to believe it was the choke sticking or something. But I'll try the points and see what happens. Thanks

I would also check your float setting and carb gaskets, it could be as the carb sits, it is leaking gas in to the intake essentially flooding it. There are many possibilities in the carb that would cause a flooding situation, blown power valve, leaky gasket, float too high, or heat induced expansion causing fuel to exit thru the overflow... run it until it is hot, then shut it off and take the flame arrestor off and see if there is fuel leaking in to the venturies..

Normally any problems exhibited by a faulty distributor or settings would show while running- not after shutting it off and trying to restart ( with a points system) but sometimes a coil on it's last legs will exhibit this behavior once it gets hot.. that's the next thing to look at as well

That's the same road I was thinking, just didn't know where to start, when it wasn't starting a lil bit of gas sitting on the bottom of the boat under the motor. I'll give it a try, thank you!

If you have gas puddling under the engine you dont need to use it till this is fixed. We dont want to read about you on the news.

If it is in the carburator somewhere, if they make a rebuild kit for it, should I just rebuild it and that should cover all my bases?

Yes, rebuild kit will cover all the parts that could possibly be leaking gas in or out of the carb..
