i have a 65hp merc on a stingray boat i took it out today and had a little bit of a hard time starting it at the start but eventually got it going. once it was going it seemed to run good we had stopped for about an hour or so and when i went to go back out it wouldn't start it would crank and it would almost start but wouldn't keep going. any ideas what it could be? i mixed the gas 50:1. its a blue band motor not sure of the year. it has sat for 2 yrs since the last time it was used and sometime before that too. please help want to take it out for july 2nd.

Re: Wont start

when was the last time the spark plugs were checked/changed? This will sometimes cause the problem with starting if your plugs have a small crack in the ceramic and when they get hot they won't spark. Also check your choke system and make sure you're choking it correctly after it's warmed up. Some of the older Mercs needed to be choked hard when cold but started easier when they were warm but I've heard of a few of the smaller motors that needed to be choked to start after they were warm too.
