wont start

i have a 470 merccruiser that wont start unless u put jumper wire from battery to + side of coil points distributer and it tries to start if u keep turning the engine over with the key but as soon as u let off it will die any suggestions

so is that 2 statements in your long sentence ??

does it run when you hot wire it ? ie : with the battery to coil wire added


and does it try to run without the jumper when you hold the key in the start or (cranking ) position ?

just trying to understand your statement here .........

that is one awful sentence...but more about punctuation later..! hahaha

So, you jump to the starter coil and she fires? Does she stay running after you remove the jumper?

With the key, she seems to want to fire? or does fire and then sputters out?

Please explain this a bit more as suggested.

Off the top of my head it sounds like a you don't have enough votage from the key to pull the coil in. Possible some corroded wire or just plain dirty..

Hard to say without some more information.

sorry about the first post was in a hurry


the motor will run with the jumper from the battery to the coil and if u take it off it will die



when u turn the key on and try to start the motor without the jumper the motor tries to start but when u let off of the key it will die and if u keep on cranking the motor it will try to run

You should measure ~10 v at the coil when the ign. key in the run position.
Did you check the landyard safety (kill) switch ?

is that the switch on the throttle lever or back on the transom

thanks for all the help on here i found the problem bad connection on the bulk connector fixed it and it started right up
