won't start

I have a 1986 Evinrude 175. I replaced the starter and took it out on the river. It ran about 20 minutes then stopped like I hit the kill switch. After sitting a few minutes it would start back. During the dead time, turning the key in the ignition wouldn't even turn the engine over. Once it started back up I idled in. This has happened on more than one outing and when I get it home it runs fine on the trailer. Now it won't turn over at all. I tested the solenoid thinking maybe it was bad. Plenty of juice at the top, none at the bottom. No juice on the top side post, even with the key in start. I changed the solenoid out and still have the same problem. No power going through. I have tried testing the ignition, but I really don't konw what I'm doing with it. Am I missing something? I have twin engines and the other one runs fine. I am duplicating the tests on each to see what the results are like on a working engine, but don't know what else to check and don't have a manual yet (on order though). Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Re: won't start

Is it pumping water? Yeah, this may be a long shot, but it may be overheating.

Re: won't start

It is pumping water--that is when it runs. I thought about a heat-related problem since it would shut off while running and generally after running at higher rpms. I thought that the dead time might be allowing some part of the motor to cool down enough to start back up. I don't know enough about outboards to rule it out. It won't even try to turn over now, though I can turn the flywheel by hand. It seems like it has to be something electrical, like a bad switch. Don't know.

Jax....

An overheat problem should not effect the engines ability to at least crank. If you have two motors, then they both have separate ignition switches. Take a look under the dash and see if there are any signs of the switch gettin hot, like bulging or something like that. You really need to get a manual which would include wiring diagrams of your engines. Would make the trouble shooting a lot easier.

You could probably find the problem with a multi-meter if you had the diagrams.

Keep us posted.

I found the problem. It was the neutral start switch in the throttle box. I bypassed it (temporarily) and the motor fires right up. Thanks everyone for the advice!
