Re: wont turn over

That is your starter solenoid, when you turn the key it puts power to one of the small posts which in turn drives the solenoid to put power to your starter, it either need to be cleaned or it could be fried. Put a one end of a test light to ground, put one to the small post (one is ground and one is power from the ignition switch) and get someone to crank, if the light lights up and your connections are good (no green or rust) then the solenoid need replacing.

Re: wont turn over

This is not clear " when i turn the key on my 86 johnson 40 hp nothing happens"???????? it was turning over. " nothing at all happens, or when i turn the key, the starter turns, but does not turn the motor. or the starter turns the motor, but the motor does not start.??????

which is it. with out knowing this. can't really give proper advice.

Re: wont turn over

It won't turn over for long if you don't fix the terminal on the big red cable in your picture. The one on the bottom of the solenoid. That shows severe corrossion and fraying. Fix it or you will be back here again soon.
