I am trying to redo the interior of my boat and have a question about the padding along the side and back of the boat. What is there now has approximately 3/8 inch plywood, foam padding and then the vinyl material. The wood on the starboard side is too rotten to reuse. But it is bent at a 90 degree angle within just a few inches. How do you get plywood to bend like this? I am thinking it would be easier to use 1/4 inch or smaller. Any other ideas?

Is it possible that you have two pieces stapled or nailed together or that the wood has just rotted and broken in to this shape? I have never seen and never will see a piece of solid 3/4" ply bent in a 90 angle :) . I assume this is the frame of the seating you are talking about, and it is prob the two pieces joined together not bent. Hope this helps, RR

mjk - they make a plywood that has 1 or 2 layers of some type of plastic in it. I don't know what it's called - but a strip of 3/8 can be bent in a 90 with about a 1-1 1/2" radius. I do alot of contracting at a hospital here, and the staff carpenters use it to build Nurses' Stations.
I'll check with them tuesday and find out what its called. If you don't need much... I could probably talk them out of some.

It's called bending plywood datawire. You would use it in 1/4" and laminate 2 layers of it on a rigid mold. Sort of a specialty item, but it is possible you could order a 4x8 sheet at a lumberyard. It's only about 25 bucks a sheet. You would need to hone your laminating skills and have plenty of clamps abailable. Possibly you could find a woodworker that knows how to do this...wouldn't be a big job for the right person...just a thought :)

Just make the 90 by joining two pieces with either epoxy or good polyurethane glue (like Gorilla glue) The later will expand to fill gaps the former won't so your joint must be good if you go that route. Make sure you seal the wood to help prevent rot. Don't forget to use only stainless steel staples.

Are you sure they are not just butted together and using angle iron? Thats what Bayliner did on my boat. Had a hard time figuring out what they did as they hide everything.
Carpet on the floor- oh you dont see the epoxy that was supposed to protect it from rot- eh? :)
What epoxy?, as my foot goes through the floor.

Oh well the hull is fantasic now to replace the crap inside with quality. :)
