ok heres the deal

there are alot of wood types out there some great some not good at all for building stringers and transoms.availability is a major issue and to a smaller extent price.i cant buy what i cant locate.so if all you pro's and experienced folks out there would please make a list of what woods are best for transom and a seperat list for stringers in order from most desirable to least. I believe it would be very helpfull to myself as well as many others who will be looking for this type of list later on.so without any more babble from me. shall we start.

Edit: just as an afterthough.i know i could use the search function and compile the list on my own but im still new to rebuilding.plus i think it would be a very valuable post to have the list already available.

I use Douglas Fir plywood for the floor, transom, and stringers work just great and is strong if i remember right it was AC exterior, nice and smooth on one side and a little rough on the other and is in my book as good as marine ply.

I'm 5 miles south of Haskell or 14 miles west of Muskogee, little berg called Jamesville, By the way is there any boat salvages in the tulsa area? I'm looking for a windshield for my 59 Texas Maid. By the way ive got 3 gal. of resin and about 10 yards of mat left over if you are interested.

I used AC ply for my floor, transom, stringers. No one here had AB or I would have used that. My original stringers were 3/4 inch, so logic dictated that 3/4 ply would get it done. 1/2 for floor, 3/4 and 5/8 layered for transom...

Working fine...I installed VHF on memorial day weekend, and finally fabbed up a connecting rod between my main and kicker motor. I used heim joints and rod with threads cut in it with a die. A bit cheaper than an EZ steer and works good. I'll have to put pics on my web thingy if it ever stops raining long enough to actually uncover the boat.

Re: wood choices for stringer and transom

Great the post is getting good replies.has been a good help to me and hopefully others.keep em coming though.im sure there are a few woods not mentioned so far,but im not the expert so i cannot be certain, but wasnt there a redwood.had seen it mentioned somewhere.
Bass to be more precise I live in Coweta.if your in the haskell area im sure you know where it is.and i may be verywell interested in the leftover material you have.

Edit: almost forgot, yes there is a boat salvage in Tulsa. They also sell new parts but those usually have to be ordered and take about 3 days to come in.I personally havent tried out the salvage offerings here yet but the man who owns it seems nice enouph, and has been in the biz awhile last time i went to his web sight they mainly showed boat accessories like tubes and such. {{ Boat Parts 4601 E. Pine St Tulsa 836-1480))) also another one im not certain its a salvage but have been told from a coworker that it was, wouldnt hurt to check it out.((( Skeg Depot 3215 E.8th St Tulsa. 488-9636 ))) hope this helps a bit.

glad someone asked..

because RED oak has absolutely ZERO rot resistance.. bar-none ... it'll rot quicker than a garden growd tomato..

Well, too late for me. I've got 1x2x8 red oak strips to replace the top edge supports for my 15ft aluminum vhull boat. I've got them waterproofed. We'll see how long they last and how well they stand up to the Oklahoma weather. I'll try to post a status on this in a few months.

For my money, I don't think you can beat the cypress, may be a little heavy but man is that stuff indestuctable. Ive seen old work boats down around the georgia coast that are 50 years old made out of that stuff and their bones look great....
