I am debating giving the transom on my cheiftain a coat of some sort of preservative. Anyone have any ideas what product would be best for this ? Thompson water seal??? I don't want to use something that could cause corosion.

I'm no pro by any means but I'd probably use epoxy. Also take all the top caps off and let it soak in if the transom is in good shape. If not then replace it. I'd also closely inspect any thru holes cuz if they weren't sealed well its likely rotted in those areas.

Thompsons is garbage. Basically just colored wax.

Best would be fiberglass and resin (poly or epoxy). Second would be epoxy alone (and then painted as epoxy is not UV tolerant). Third would probably be marine spar varnish. Lastly would be something like porch and floor paint.

If your transom is not new (maybe still in the boat), then I would go the epoxy route. The Rot Doctor's CPES system is very, very good. http://www.rotdoctor.com/. I have used it from treating dry rot in fence posts, repairing detoriation from carpenter ants to sealing new plywood used to create a chicken coop. That coop has been outside in Oregon's of liqued sunshine for 6 years and still going strong.

I've had fairly good luck with thompson's on certain things, boards included, but not plywood, like most transoms are made. Epoxy will help reglue it while sealing it. I learned that here. And as MichaelP says inspect carefully.
